My Subject: Thunderbird Performance Issue on New Ubuntu LTS PC

Hello,

We are experiencing a performance issue with Thunderbird on a new PC running Ubuntu LTS Linux. We have two PCs with Ubuntu installed, one with the last and one with the current LTS:

On older, less powerful device where Thunderbird runs significantly better. A new PC with better hardware, more RAM more CPU cores etc where Thunderbird is extremely slow.

Both PCs are configured with the same email accounts. We did fully copy profile frm old to new to not lose any mails. However, on the new device, Thunderbird causes full CPU utilization after startup and becomes unresponsive for a considerable amount of time, every time we start. Working with it is almost impossible and painful.

Here’s what we’ve tried so far on the new PC:

Running Thunderbird in Safe Mode. Reinstalling Thunderbird without using Docker. (apk and bash commands) Unfortunately, neither of these steps resolved the issue. We suspect the problem might be related to the current Ubuntu LTS version. As already told the old computer outperformes the new one abt thunderbird.

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem or found a solution? Any help would be greatly appreciated. What or how to test next?

Any more detail needed? I might get the hardware specs and mailbox sizes but as said newer computer is slower and mailboxes are the same.

Thank you!

Michael

The crashes are happening daily, and lately more than once a day. I'm using Thunderbird 128.6.0esr (64 bit) on a desktop PC running Xubuntu 24.04.1 LTS. There are about a dozen accounts that get mail automatically from POP servers. The crashes happen when TB is running in the background, or on another dessktop, or minimized. I'm using a new profile created a few weeks ago because the old profile folder had grown very large. This problem did not occur with the old profile.

I have a regular correspondent who sends emails addressed to 65 of his closest friends (including me). (He's very old, and getting him to change is hopeless). Thunderbird usually lets his emails into my Inbox, but also frequently forwards them to a "Bulk" mail folder. (I never set up such a folder, or any rule to send mails there). No amount of telling Thunderbird that none of his emails are not "junk" prevents this from recurring, though it does move individual emails so noted to my Inbox. How do I stop Thunderbird from diverting mails from this sender to the Bulk folder? Rules? Filters? I don't see any self-help topics that look like they address such a problem. TNX FS

Search in Thunderbird. If I search for a word such as "availability" it returns results for "available" with or without double quotes. It's a bit unhelpful that there isn't a way to force search only for what I am looking for, so I end up getting search results for the wrong thing.

Would be nice to have a wildcard search such as "availab*" which would be more intuitive.

How do I ensure it searches exactly for what I want, and not interpret my search keywords?

Cheers, Tom

I have eMail waiting in the Outbox folder. I open the File menu. "Send unsent messages" is greyed out. I think this has been happening for about a week. I tried restarting Thunderbird. I am using version 115.10.1 (32-bit).

I could send email by moving my messages to the Draft folder, opening each one, and choosing File -> Send Now. But when I tried just now, "Send Now" was greyed out.

Thank you, Bob

Thunderbird version 128.6.0esr There is a gray "tool bar" or whatever you call it under the menu bar. It appears to be a recent message history.

There are dozens or hundreds of recent message icons on this bar - so many that it is totally useless! How do I get rid of it forever?

When I open a message the folders pane/window/whatever disappears. How do I fix it so the folders pane NEVER disappears?

I didn't have all of these problems on older versions of Thunderbird. How do I switch back to one of the older versions that works?

See attached picture.

Hi everyone.

Since I constantly switch between multiple computers, some of them Windows, some Ubuntu, some dual boot, I have installed portable clients for both platforms onto an USB stick. These are set up to use the same profile folder. Generally, this works fine.

However, I have one issue with my POP3 accounts, which are set up to keep messages on the server for 7 days. After I have fetched a message with the Linux client, checking for messages with the Windows client will fetch the message again, resulting in duplicates.

I checked the data being written to popstate.dat and checked the knowledge base to find out the issue. I found out that the "Flag" (always "k") and "UIDL" sections are written identically by the two clients, but the "Timestamp" section is different, which causes the issue. According to the knowledge base, "The message's time stamp in the file corresponds to the date and time in the From - line at the top of the message source." Needless to say that the message sources of the duplicates are identical, so this doesn't add up.

So here are my questions: 1. Why is a timestamp written to popstate.dat in the first place? Shouldn't the UIDL be enough to uniquely identify a message? 2. Why is the timestamp calculated differently from the same source data on Linux and Windows clients?

Thanks, Ansgar

My Thunderbird app worked fine for over a year and then I noticed that it had stopped downloading after December 20, 2024. I was able to write emails and send them successfully but none of my incoming emails arrived (I have access over my phone). This problem occurred shortly after my APP upgraded to Thunderbird version 128.5esr. I've downloaded the Thunderbird installer and run it but the program still refuses to download my emails. Is their anything I can do without having to find a replacement? I am running windows 10 on an HP laptop I bought in about 2011. Thanks Vic Bastron vcbastron@yahoo.com

I think I found the problem in not deleted files (local.sqlite-shm and local.sqlite-wal) after closing Thunderbird. So I will have problems with implementing new dates or deleting no longer used dates. Also the synchronisation between TB and MyPhoneExplorer doesn't work. After deleting the two files (thunderbird is not running) and the newstart of TB all works fine. The next closing of TB leaves the files again in calendar-data. And additionaly the staying file local.sqlite-wal has a date of 04.11.2020 !? A very old file in my opinion. What can I do about this?

The Buttons in the Quick Search bar vanish when the bar get smaller. This is done via javascript and the onoverflow event. How can I disable this vanishing and always show the buttons? I am using custom user css but couldn't get it to work so far.

When I set

#qfb-qs-textbox {
  max-width: 20px !important;
}

in the developer tools, it seems to work, but when this is contained in a custom css file, it doesn't work anymore.

There is also #quick-filter-bar defined, but that doesn't seem to work.

Any help/hint is much appreciated! Thanks in advance.
